Caring for your Disana Woolens

How do I wash my Disana woolen clothes?

Washing wool is no more complicated than washing your hair, since wool is hair, as well - sheep hair - and, in fact, very similar to our own!

The same things your own hair doesn’t like during shampooing, neither does wool - for example, using water which is too hot water or too cold, or rubbing and scrubbing too aggressively.  Treating your natural wool item in the same way you treat your hair will give best results!

Do I need to wash my Disana woolen item before using it for the first time?

No, you don’t need to wash your woolens before using them for the first time. Since Disana articles are almost free of chemicals and do not contain any questionable substances that could harm your baby/child, there’s no need to wash them first.

How often do I need to wash my woolen article?

The less often you wash wool, the better.  Wool has self-cleansing properties. Wool fibers have an extraordinary surface that rejects dirt particles, as well as bad odors and sweat, and stops them from entering the fibers.  Airing is enough to remove the dirt particles from the surface and to make the woolen article hygienically clean.

Can I wash my woolen article in my washing machine?

Yes, but at your own risk. Some modern washing machines have a designated wool program, which sets the temperature for the cycles.  However washing machines are designed differently.  Some spin cycles may spin too aggressively and the temperature variations of the water may be too great for the wool to tolerate.  Washing by hand will give you the best results and help maintain the longevity of your item.

But I’m able to wash other woolen items in my washer without any damage or shrinking!

Yes, that’s possible.  Nowadays many woolen articles are processed in a way to allow machine washing.  A lot of aggressive chemicals are used. The wool fibers are surrounded with an artificial resin cover.  The characteristics of wool get lost in this process. Their naturalness is removed.

How can I hand wash my woolen article in the best way?

Infrequently and with care!

A clean bathroom sink works perfectly for this.  It has the right volume and an ergonomic working height.

You also need a mild wool shampoo, a terry cloth and a small tub for the wet wool articles.  Add lukewarm water into the sink. Lukewarm means about 75 degrees. If the water feels warm to your touch, it is likely too warm.

Add wool shampoo according to the directions on the package.  Then place your woolen article into the water.

Heavy stains can be carefully treated with ox-gall soap before (at Danish Woolen Delight, this is a product we will be adding in the near future), which is well known as a natural stain remover. Gently press the article below the water surface and carefully repeat the process a few times.

Don’t wring or rub it, simply push it a few times, no more than 1-2 minutes, that’s all.

Take the woolen article out of the washing water and rinse it carefully with fresh lukewarm water.

After rinsing, remove the article from the water and squeeze it gently, with care.  You can also lay the garment on a dry terry cloth towel and fold the free ends of the towel over the item and gently press out the water.

Pull the wet article carefully into shape and place it on a dry terry cloth towel.

It is best to dry your woolens lying flat - a drying rack works perfectly.  Woolen articles which are hung to dry may become misshapen as they dry.

Avoid drying your woolen article placed on a heated surface or in strong sunlight. This will harm the fibers.  Strong sunlight can discolor the wool.  A shady, well ventilated place is perfect.

That’s all!
