Can I use olive oil or coconut oil with wool nursing pads?

Many people ask if using coconut oil or olive oil will ruin the wool pads?  - No, it will not. Some women use coconut oil or olive oil instead of lanolin-ointment, often recommended for quicker healing of sore nipples experienced by some in the beginning of breastfeeding.

Just as with lanolin ointment, the fatty substances might build up in the pads after a period of use.  If you notice this, and the oily patch is not removed by regular washing, you can melt away the oils by boiling the wool nursing pads.  The key is to place them in lukewarm water, and slowly heat the water to a gentle boil. The oily build-up will melt out of the pads.  The pads should then be re-lanolinized after boiling.  See Nursing Pads Care
