I have a dilemma and I’d love to receive some feedback! For years we’ve used the photo of a little baby girl lying peacefully on a mattress pad, covered with her LANACare woolen blanket, to show how soothingly soft & comforting LANACare products are. But this little girl is lying on her side, on a soft, cushy mattress pad. Research now shows that babies should sleep on their backs on a firm surface to help prevent SIDS.
As a midwife and mother, I wholeheartedly support the “Back to Sleep” campaign. Research across the world shows that laying the baby on its back to sleep significantly reduces a baby’s risk for SIDS – in some countries SIDS rates were cut almost in half by adhering to this one single measure – findings too important to be ignored! Also, providing a firm surface for your baby to lie on has also been proven significant in reducing SIDS. LANACare mattress pads have been revised to provide this firm underlying surface for your baby.
Our photo of the baby girl was a true-to-life photo. Her father, a Danish photographer, was amazed when his baby girl, who was crying inconsolably, settled down and fell asleep once wrapped in her LANACare blanket. He was so impressed he felt compelled to photograph her. Thus she became the representative for LANACare products worldwide! She loved her LANACare blanket and carried it with her wherever she went, in the same way so many babies come to treasure their LANACare blanket.
So what to do? Should we stop using this photo as it no longer represents evidence-based research? Or should we continue? Please help! Send us your feedback! Thanks!
